Many people today are interested in hypnosis for weight loss. It sounds so easy – just get put into an altered state and let the hypnotists work their magic. There are hundreds of websites offering hypnosis downloads on the internet, weight loss hypnosis online programs are available, so how do you know who to trust?

Hypnosis suffers from frequent misrepresentation by those who want to take advantage of the overweight individuals in search of easy and fast ways to lose pounds. Many of the claims about weight loss through hypnosis on the internet are overly optimistic at best, if not fraudulent.

The material available online about hypnosis as a weight loss method is distributed by people trying to sell videotapes, audiotapes, books, or seminars. Almost everywhere you look, you encounter ads like these: “This one hour hypnotherapy CD which costs a mere $19.95 will quickly erase old habits and establish new ones–INSTANTLY!”


Many websites offer testimonials as evidence for weight loss, as much as 122 pounds after only one session. But this fact cannot be easily verified and even if true does not guarantee credibility, especially when advertisers neglect to explain the process by which hypnosis will occur. They claim that because hypnosis is natural (it does not involve drugs), it cannot harm you and is a superior method of weight loss. Hypnosis can be a potentially dangerous thing for people who are not trained to use it.


Scientific literature explains how does hypnosis work and how effective it is in the weight loss process. A number of studies indicate that hypnosis combined with a behavioral weight management program contributes significantly to weight loss. Hypnosis operates mainly as a way to increase the persons’ attention to suggestions of behavioral programs as well as to reinforce their weight loss.

Weight loss hypnosis works by interrupting negative habits and replacing them with new empowering ones. Healthy weight loss and increased metabolism require new habits of behavior and thought. For example, if the old pattern is eating sugary and fatty foods, then the new pattern needs to be a ritual of eating fresh vegetables, nuts, seeds, fruit and drinking a lot of water. You program yourself to snack on fruits and vegetables instead of candy.

Hypnosis can be most effective when pursuing a comprehensive program of diet, exercise, and behavior modification. So take caution if you plan to pursue weight loss hypnosis, because even the programs that appear to be most legitimate can be covering poor research or fictitious claims.
